Pond Aeration Systems - Basics of Selecting and Installing

!: Pond Aeration Systems - Basics of Selecting and Installing

When looking for a solution to managing water quality, or simply for aesthetic enhancement, there are three basic types of pond and lake aerators to consider; surface spray aerators, air diffused systems and horizontal aspirators or mixers. Each type has unique differences and efficiencies which can be utilized in many different ways to achieve maximum benefit. Below are some basic guidelines to take into account when selecting and installing an aeration system.

Selecting an Aeration System: The size, shape and depth of a pond should dictate the type of aeration system, or combination of systems to be used; keep in mind when water quality management is an objective, recommended sizing is 2HP per surface acre.

Surface Spray (Floating) Systems: Ponds less than 15 ft deep, or wherever fountain spray aesthetics are desired.

Diffused Aeration Systems: Ponds 15 ft and greater in depth, and when no surface spray is desired. (Note: Efficiency is lost when used in ponds less than 15 ft, but can be remedied with additional diffuser manifolds placed throughout the pond. These systems are not recommended for ponds less than 8 ft.)

Mixers and Aspirators: In ponds less than 9 ft deep where lateral movement is dictated, or no surface spray is desired.

Electrical Requirements: In order to operate the systems efficiently, and without nuisance tripping, it will be necessary to know if sufficient power is available, how close it is to the source, and if there are other electrical requirements that may be utilizing the same source, ie. irrigation, lighting, etc. It's also important to follow both local and national electrical codes during installation, which will often require burying/trenching wire in conduit from the power source to the aerators power control center, and from the PCC out to the ponds edge.

Having operational electricity is necessary before flotation and start-up of any aeration system, for security and mechanical considerations, and may become a scheduling consideration that could need attention. A certified electrician may also be required during installation.

System Installation: There are two ways of securing most units into position, anchoring (to the pond bottom), and mooring (to the pond edges, either above or beneath the surface.) Methods of securing and quality of materials used can affect security, ease of service, and safety, and should be included in the planning process. Tools and materials required can include: a shovel (to bury/trench cable,) conduit, stainless steel cable or nylon rope, cinder blocks and a boat (when anchoring,) and rebar or duckbill anchors (when mooring.) Diffused Air Systems do not require anchoring or mooring, but a boat is often required during installation.

Intensive landscaping around the pond such as retaining walls, waterfalls, and planting beds could affect the installation process, in addition to future available access for service or maintenance. Further coordination may be needed between the aeration installer and landscape and/or irrigation contractor in these instances as well.

Water Fountain Benefits

!: Water Fountain Benefits

Water fountains have become very popular over the last decade and everyday people are realizing the benefits a fountain can have. Highlighted are some key benefits of fountains.

Stress Relief & Relaxation

Everyone has a little stress in their life and could use some stress relief and relaxation at the end of a hard day. With its soothing sounds of flowing water your water fountain will bring stress relief and relaxation to your environment. Great for your favorite room, office, garden or patio. Be sure in your research for a fountain, you look for one with nice water sounds, nothing too overbearing or with no sound at all. Many fountains offer adjustable pumps so you can adjust the flow to your liking.

Indoor & Outdoor Décor

Water fountains add instant beauty to your surroundings. Whether it is a large wall fountain, a tabletop fountain or a garden fountain, you are decorating and showing your style. A wall fountain is a piece of art and will quickly become a centerpiece for your home. Interior Designers are using these fountains as a focal point in their decorating. There are many art fountains and many wall fountains with slate or glass available.

Natural Humidifier

Fountains act as natural humidifiers, adding moisture to a dry room. Humidifiers can be loud and have a buzzing or motor sound. Water Fountains will humidify the air while you enjoy the soothing sound of running water. Humidifiers can also get mold and mildew build up quickly where a fountain with moving water will not do this. A Water Fountain can also help your indoor plants by adding extra humidity that is lost when heat or air conditioning units are running.

Negative Ions

In today's electronic world there are many gadgets that emit negative ions in our homes and offices. Water fountains can improve the air in your home with negative ions, reducing the air pollution. Dust is attracted by the negative ions so your water fountain is actively working to purify the air. The continuous moving water will not only relax you with its water sounds, but will also rejuvenate you with negative ions. Water fountains are much more stunning to look at than an ionic air purifier and can be less costly.

Drinking Source for Pets

Have you ever noticed your dog or cat wanting to drink from a faucet or hose? Pets typically love running water. Your fountain can be a favorite for your pet at the same time it is adding beauty to your home. As long as you aren't using any harmful chemicals to your water this is completely safe. If you need chemicals to remove algae or any other build up and you have pets or small children try the Care Free Enzymes Fountain Protector. It is non-toxic, all natural enzymes and bacteria free.

Drowning Out Annoying Sounds

You will be amazed at how even a soft flowing water sound can drown out other sounds around you such as traffic, voices in the next room, that dog that always barks at the same time every night and the neighbor in the upstairs apartment who walks loud. The sound of flowing water will help you relax and give you a new sound to enjoy drowning out other sounds around you.

Fountain Pump - How to Choose the Right Water Fountain Pump

!: Fountain Pump - How to Choose the Right Water Fountain Pump

Choosing the best fountain pump for your water project is very important. There are a lot of things to consider. To help you make the best choice, ask yourself:

Is the pump going to be used for a stand-alone fountain? Or will you create a more elaborate water feature with a pond and a waterfall?

Selecting a pump for a water fountain on its own is a simpler question to answer. Follow the fountain manufacturer's recommendation but also examine the guarantee or warranty of the product. When comparing prices be sure to look at the amperage and wattage of the pumps you're considering. Generally speaking the lower these two numbers the less electricity it will take to run the pump.

If you are planning to create a more elaborate water feature with a pond and a waterfall consider the following:

Will the pump be submerged in the pond or sitting outside the water? Unless you are planning a very large pond or very high waterfall, use a submersible pump. They are less expensive and quieter to run than external pumps. Choose a magnetic drive rather than a direct drive, it uses less electricity and will save you money longterm.
What is the volume of the pond? To maintain a healthy pond it is recommended you circulate the entire volume once every two hours. Therefore, if your pond has 1,000 gallons, you require a 500 g.p.h. (gallons per hour) pump.
What is the height of the waterfall and its distance from the pump? And how wide do you want the spillway be? When purchasing a pump you'll want one that exceeds your needs. Consider that it requires 150 g.p.h per inch of spillway width. And although substantially less, pumping water horizontally still puts a demand on the pump. Generally 10 horizontal feet are approximately equal to 1 vertical foot or lift.

For example, a 5 foot waterfall that is situated 20 feet from the pump, will need to account for a total of 7 feet of lift. A maximum head height of 7 feet, however, means that's as high as the pump can move the water. That means next to no water movement at the height of your waterfall. Probably not the effect you want. So be sure to consult the performance curve chart of any pump you are considering to select one that exceeds your minimum 7 foot requirement.

To see what your waterfall will look like before choosing your pump try this: use a standard garden hose and set it to flow over your waterfall where you are going to place the outlet from your water line. Turn it on full blast. Typical municipal water pressure can run from 800-900 g.p.h. So if you like what you see, you know you'll need at least a 800 g.p.h. pump. If you're not impressed, be prepared to go bigger.

Fiberglass Pond Liner

!: Fiberglass Pond Liner

A pond is a place of beauty and serenity in a garden or a building. Modern materials have made pond building cheaper and easier. There is a great variety of choice in the size, shape, nature, material and cost of a pond. Man-made ponds are made of different kinds of Pond Liners. The basic difference is between preformed and flexible forms of liners.

A fiberglass Pond Liner is the most common type of pre-formed Pond Liner. Pre-cast fiberglass ponds are available in garden stores. While they are the most durable of Pond Liners, on the flip side, they tend to be less attractive, more expensive and more difficult to conceal than flexible Pond Liners. In-situ fiberglass is better, but it is even more expensive. Nevertheless, there are many admiring customers of fiberglass Pond Liners too.

Fiberglass shells are easy to install and come in many shapes and sizes. Simply set them in the ground and they are ready to stock with fish and aquatic plants. The best fiberglass liners have a smooth black liner surface with a deep look. They will support rocks and their own weight of water above them without cracking. In terms of ease of installation and longevity, fiberglass liners are the best.

Some of the advantages of fiberglass are evident to all. It is the easiest to install. No hole need be dug and the decorative pool has just to be set on top of the ground and surrounded by rocks. Fish ponds are also easy to install, as precise grading and a sand base is not required. A rigid fiberglass pond does not need support to stay level. It will not cave in from back-fill, nor cave out from water pressure in Case there is some problem with the hole you dug.

It has a professional appearance, as it pays heed to details like putting the pool edge ½ inch above grade, and that cascades should be completely covered with rock for a natural look. In any Case, a fiberglass pool or cascade will not sag and collapse like a flexible pool. Also, the pool can be left in operation at all times, even in winter. Fiberglass allows space for expanding ice, and is not prone to shattering or cracks like plastic. The surface is easy to clean with cloth and water. It is also protected from wear and tear over a lifetime.

For those who do not have much space in their garden, do not want to waste time digging and filling, and want a long-lasting water body in their garden, fiberglass is the right choice.

Waterfall interior - Pump Care & Maintenance Standard

!: Waterfall interior - Pump Care & Maintenance Standard

Regular care and maintenance of your indoor waterfall is relatively quick and simple. Periodic cleaning requires wiping it completely with a soft cloth to keep the unit in excellent condition.

While this may be true for the waterfall unit, the pump requires a more thorough maintenance especially the water. Evaporation and humidity are two elements that can damage the pump if it is not properly Monitored. A fair amount of water is loss due to evaporation and when the humidity is high. Both of these factors severely deplete the water supply in your fountain. This situation can damage the pump. Fill up the water level daily to prevent this problem.

With water at the right level, pumps should work properly as long as regular maintenance is performed. If the problem is unresolved, try taking the pump apart and cleaning it. Dust particles and other debris may settle in the water and absorbed into the pump. Covering the pump with a soft fabric such as pantyhose will prevent particles from accumulating into the pump.

Never attempt repairing the pump when it is running, doing so exposes you to electrical shock and damage your waterfall.

Changing the Water in your Waterfall

Clean and completely drain the water in your waterfall every four to six months. Manufacturers recommend using distilled water instead of water from the faucet. Mineral deposits contained in tap water can easily clog your fountain and may affect the pump's ability to work properly. Water treatments in between cleanings will also ensure that the water is fresh. There are products available in the market made especially for water treatment.

Fountec is an EPA registered product that is highly effective in the prevention of algae without harming the environment and animals. It is also heat, sunlight, and evaporation resistant. Use a small dose of Fountec because it is highly concentrated and will last for several weeks.

Protec is another product used in maintaining the beauty of fountain surfaces. It contains a blend of advanced organophosphate, protecting against white calcium mineral buildup and metallic stains. It is long lasting; a single dose can last up to a month or longer.

Following these simple maintenance and proper care guidelines guarantee long (--) term enjoyment of your indoor waterfall.
